Black Baltimore Beauty by Scientificquilter
Springtime in baltimore
I have talked and blogged about this mini quilt for three years or so off and on. I wanted to learn applique, and I had only made two smallish quilt tops before, so I signed up for this class.
The class was a little expensive, but it was my first experience with applique, a glue based applique where the teacher called it "instant gratification" as you get all the pieces done, and then glue together and then stitch after it's all glued.
The pattern is Springtime in Baltimore, and done by Mimi Dietrich. I did take some liberties with it. The two blue birds coming up the sides were from another pattern in her book. And the large hearts in the middle of the opposite two sides I drafted larger.
The class was only 4 weeks long. And each week we had a TON of homework. Luckily one of the weeks I had vacation and I used a lot of time hand stitching the applique down.
I had tried to hand quilt this not terribly soon after making the top, and it sat only one center of one block hand quilted for 2 years. Then after a personal spat, I got out my sewing machine and free motion quilted on it with clamshells and freehand around the borders. I love this quilt.
