Description

I got the monkey fabric and coordinating fabrics from a traveling quilt materials package. Only stipulation was that the fabrics be used in charity quilts; take what you want and add something. So I took these and a pin cushion and put a bunch of solids into the box.

After looking at the coordinating fabrics, I realized I'd need more to get up to the 40 x 60 size I wanted to make.

8/14/13 Center strip finished with Michael Miller Siren Song from a recent shopping expedition. I knew I "needed" it when I saw it.

8/15 The top is finished.  I'd intended to use the little squares too, but ended up liking the big open spaces.  I'll make a doll or an infant quilt with the small stuff.

8/21/13 Finished the infant top (36 x 36) from the leftovers. Now to get set up for quilting.

11/26/13 Finally began practice quilting on the "leftover" quilt. Practiced pebbles and spirals.  Had lost even stitch length since August (just didn't make it to practice daily or even weekly). Had to get that back. Also had some trouble with spirals, with keeping curve smooth and with getting the center right. Took 16 tries to get to a decent center.  Skipped stitches in the four-patch block; something about sewing over seams I have to learn.

12/3/13 The small one is finished--can't check off the date because the big one isn't yet. This is the first time my batting filled my binding. :-) And the best mitered corners I've done so far.  (Didn't get photo of corners; you'll have to trust me.) Also trying the posed photo.

Charwirfs

Pretty darn cute? Too bad there was not enough coordinating fabric. Do you want donations? I could find something in my stash that would match close enough.

Clairealex

Charwirfs Thanks for the thought. I did some stash diving and found a print and two solids that I think will do the trick.

Charwirfs

Clever girl. Amazing what we have in our stash. Looking forward to seeing this finished!

Mymble

I love what you are doing with this - clever and resourceful!

Clairealex

Mymble and Charwirfs Thanks! I'll be hitting the 'to be quilted' pile soon.

Mymble

Eeek...the leftovers are wonderful too...love it...you have definitely made every inch work here!

Clairealex

Mymble Thanks again. :-)

Seeneed

Love the fabric selections. They just make me smile.

Speattle

Can you tell us what sewing machine you are using? thanks.

Clairealex

Speattle Singer Featherweight.

Speattle

I was wondering if it was! I was just given one by a friend. It was her mom's who was a professional dressmaker and milliner.

It needs a bit of spiffing up, but I am excited to use it.

Speattle

So you do your FMQ on it?

Clairealex

Speattle I do. My other machine is a 30+ year old White that I got when "free arm" was new. The table I had for it has broken. I have a Featherweight table, so that makes the FW the machine of choice unless I need the free arm or zig zag stitch.

HawkFan

So cute and congrats on the great mitered corners!

Mouseinmypocket

This is super fun! I'm sure whoever gets it will really appreciate it.

Mymble

Really cute!

Clairealex

HawkFan , Mouseinmypocket , Mymble Thanks. It was fun to do. It will be more fun when I get more control of the FMQ.

lisastuf

What an adorable quilt! Love it! :)

Clairealex

lisastuf Thanks. I'm on a quilting roll, so may get to the big one as well soon.
