Description

I watched the other group as they progressed through their Improv-Robin and decided I would like to try the Improv style.  I've done other Round Robins and Row Robins but never an Improv-ANYTHING.  Planning is more my style so I'm getting ready to JUMP, not step, out of my comfort zone with this Robin.

I'm excited to see what happens to my starter block as it travels through the members of our group.

I decided I would do a paper-pieced block after deciding the block I was going to use was too traditional.  This new block is a design of 627handworks and part of her Rock'n Block Free Blocks.  She did a series of ten paper-pieced blocks all named after music groups she's especially liked over the years. Every block was awesome but I chose "Mercury", named after Freddy Mercury. You can find more of her Rock'n Blocks at www.627handworks.com.

"Mercury" has eight sections with seven pieces in each section.  There are actual four sections and four reverse sections.  There are 56 pieces in all, but it was not a difficult block to put together.

I decided to use lots of bright colors which will give my co-members plenty of options.  I used white and a "low volume" grey alternating as backdrops for the brights.  Then I chose a text fabric in black and white to border the whole thing.  This is the first text fabric I've used in any block and the only one I had was some Confucius sayings but they seemed appropriate so I used them.

October:  I received a photo from Chandra showing what she did with my starter block.  It's incredibly amazing!    I just put her photo up so you can all enjoy.  That's Round 1 for my block.

I have finished Charwirf's Round 1.  I was stumped by this, my very first IMPROV, round.  After much research I attempted to carry on the flower that Char started with for the bulk of her block.  The continued "flowers" are quite improvisational so I guess I completed my "assugnment".  I just don't how successful I was at it.  First time was tough!

Oct. 30, 2013   I completed Belinda's Round 2.   I loved the Wonky Churn Dash Belinda started with so I repeated it in a smaller block.  I also liked the curvy center.  With so many small squares, I was happy to see the curve giving your eye a little something extra to look at.  I like some curves thrown in with squares so I added a section with curves and when it looked too plain, I added a few hexagons.

Oct.31m 2013  I sent the photo of this to Belinda today.

December 2 2013  I have completed Jane's round (3).  I felt that the cupcake needed to make a reappearance so I paper-pieced them for each corner.  Then, I had a bag of small scraps of blacks on whites and whites on blacks that I decided would work for the sides.  I did two of the scrappy flying geese and two of the curved pieces.   I think the curved pieces were more "improv" but I think the result works; at least I hope it does.  These are ready to send on to Chandra but I'll wait a bit to give her time to work on her other one.

January 8, 2014   I sent Claire's block on to Chandra yesterday.  I thought on this one for a long time and decided that it was time to bring the blue back into the block and then it just had to be geese.   It seems I'm on a "flying geese" kick for these last two.  It just seemed what was called for, geese flying into the wild blue yonder.

February 5, 2014   I put Chandra's bloc in to the mail to her today.  My decision on what to add on to Chandra's block changed when I got it in the mail.  I had been thinking I would do a flying geese border around the entire block. Then I studied her block and the two small sections of yellow/white chevrons popped out at me as if to declare they had been lost in the flying geese frenzy.  I then decided to add the chevrons to two sides of the block.  I have more of the golden-yellow if Chandra decides she wants the chrevrons all around the block.

The Improv-Robin has just about come full-circle.  I'll be getting mine soon in the mail and then we'll be done.  It's been a great growing experience for me as I studied people's blocks and came up with an addition that wasn't spelled out.  I truly enjoyed this Robin and am so happy to have shared this process with some very talented stitchers.  Thanks to each of you!

Charwirfs

Wonderful....I get this soon, I hope. I will need time to do this one justice. Love the bold design, strong colors and most of all... the word-print fabric. All those choices make this block wide open for future rounds. I need to get cracking on mine...today!

True

I love this center as always your paper piecing is amazing! And love the text fabric...be careful from the looks of my stash it is addicting;-)

Mymble

Wonderful block- love all your colors and super PP!

HawkFan

This is great. It will be fun to follow its progress

Sewzalot

Love that rainbow of colors on your star! Looks very complicated!! Great-looking!!

Quilterinmotion

Charwirfs , True , Mymble , HawkFan , Sewzalot , Thank you! I thought it came out pretty good so I'm glad to hear you think so too. I'll be sending it in the next day or so, Charwirfs . Sewzalot , don't you love it when things look complicated but aren't?

Thanks all. Can't wait to see what happens with this block!

Quilt455

Wow, this is looking great. Love it

Quilterinmotion

Thanks, Quilt455.

Chandra

I received this block...I hope using improv piecing is indeed what you expect. I love responding to this pattern with some additions of my own!

Quilterinmotion

Definitely, Chandra. Go ahead and add what feels right! I can't wait to see the changes that will come along. Glad to know you got it.

Chandra

It seems I can't add this photo to your project page, but maybe you can? It is also in the ImproviRobin flickr group. http://www.flickr.com/photos/chandrawu/10014212034/

Quilterinmotion

Chandra, it is amazing!!!! I had no idea what to expect but you exceeded my greatest expectations. WOW! Can you email it to me? Then I can add it I think. marsha,hodgkins@yahoo.com

Aizome

Wow, looks great!!! heart

Charwirfs

Oh wow! Chandra, that is so Improvi and I love it! Nicely done. I have been putting my round off and now it is time to tackle it. I know what I am going to do, but it is soooooooo scary to take the plunge. Thanks for the inspiration!

HawkFan

Chandra - I love how you used improv piecing but still kept the theme of the block. Very creative!!

True

Wow love what Chandra did...so creative!

Quilterinmotion

Chandra's amazing, isn't she? HawkFan , your words were my thoughts exactly. She kept the "theme" of the block bit did a wonderful improv piecing. Now I'm even more nervous about doing the one I have!

HawkFan

Wow Marsha - what a fantastic addition to +Charwirf 's center. You carried the pattern of the center block through in a really improvisational way. I love it!

Quilterinmotion

HawkFan , really? I really felt that I was walking down a dark alley without any direction so I'm glad someone thinks I achieved what I was trying for!!! My thanks to you.

Quilterinmotion

Carolmarie , thank you. I would say it's truly improvisational...one of a kind even! Hope she likes it! Appreciate your comment,

HawkFan

Absolutely! - your additions looks as if it's a part of the original and not an addition by someone else. The colors and shapes/textures blend so well.

Chandra

Marsha, I love what you did with Charwirfs block! It reminds me a bit of Katie Pedersen and Jacquie Gerhig's Supernova blocks!

Quilterinmotion

Chandra , your praise is overwhelming. I think what you did to mine was so amazing so if you like mine, you have made me a believer! I will have to look up Katie Pedersen and Jacquie Gerhig's Supernova. I was inspired by Charlotte Newland's "Fractured Pervalong". Thank you gals so much; you've given me improvisational confidence.

Clairealex

HawkFan I so agree! quilterinmotion Excellent for anyone, not just for a first try!

Clairealex

forgot the plus, oh well...

ArloDeanQuilts

Quilterinmotion I love the addition you added to my block!!!!

Quilterinmotion

So glad, ArloDeanQuilts ! This improv is nerve-wracking for me!!

HawkFan

what a great idea to mimic the wonky churn dash. You've added a lot of great geometric elements. Very creative!

Charwirfs

Wonderful additions and great use of color. This was such a plain little block and now it just shouts, "Look at me! I am so cool!" You are good at this Improvi stuff.

Quilterinmotion

Charwirfs , HawkFan , I'm pleased that you like what I did. You might think I'm "good at this Improvi stuff" but it truly makes me nervous to work on others' pieces. I never want to send someone else's work in the wrong direction. Thanks for telling me what I'm doing is working; it will make me braver as we go along.

HawkFan

I know you said improvi was a stretch for you but trust your instincts. You have definitely been on the right track all along, although with improvi I guess there is no track - you blaze a trail and your trails are great

Quilterinmotion

HawkFan , maybe that's why I've been successful! There's no right or wrong way to do it. LOL

Mymble

Quilterinmotion Oh wow Marsha- your additions for Jane's center are fantastic- and they suit the theme perfectly- just great!

Quilterinmotion

+Mymbles, thank you! I hope Jane agrees!

HawkFan

Marsha - what a great job on Jane's center!

ArloDeanQuilts

I love your addition to Jane's center!

Quilterinmotion

HawkFan , ArloDeanQuilts , thanks both of you. I hope Jane does too. It was fun to work on.

janepez

Love it!!

Clairealex

Some good additions to each of them! Are you one ahead of schedule?I hope I"m not behind. :-)

Quilterinmotion

I don't think I'm ahead, Clairealex . I believe Jane's is the one that's due to be mailed Dec. 15th. Maybe +Charwirf can tell us for sure.

Quilterinmotion

janepez , thank goodness. Your PM to me was empty so I wondered what you were trying NOT to say to me. LOL I did enjoy working on your block.

janepez

I can not get any of my posts to show anything more than my name!

Quilterinmotion

That's not good! Ask Alex!

Kat

These are great. I really like what Chandra did with your star and the cupcake corners and flying geese you made for Jane.

Quilterinmotion

Kat , thanks. I can't wait to see more additions to everyone's robin blocks. This round is due to be mailed on the 15th so hopefully we will see lots of changes!

HawkFan

I so like what you added to Claire's center. You've brought back in the center fabric and those geese just somehow tie things together.

Quilterinmotion

Oh, whew! thank you HawkFan . I thought so too but then I thought maybe I wasn't reading the block well. I was thrown a bit when I first got the block but after studying it, it did seem to be what it should have. Appreciate your comment.

HawkFan

I think the improv format would be challenging but you've really nailed each one

Quilterinmotion

Thank you, HawkFan . Here we are almost done, and it's still something I don't feel secure about when it comes to adding on to someone else's block. Good for stretching one's abilities, though.

Charwirfs

Oooooo.....love that beautiful blue. So I am ready to send you Chandra's block, but need to get pics first. Yes, we are right on schedule. Jan 15 is the final round and all WIP are to be mailed back to the owner Feb 15. This group has been a real pleasure to work with. I am sorry to hear Jane is having trouble posting things...how frustrating!

Quilterinmotion

It will certainly be fun seeing the original block in it's new setting!

HawkFan

perfect choice on the chevrons. When I saw the small version of the photo on your blog, I swore it was chevron fabric, it matched the actual chevron fabric so well.

Clairealex

HawkFan well said!

Clairealex

HawkFan well, you can't tell what I thought was well said, the way a reply to an old comment ends up at the end. I was refetting to "on the right track" No no track, but blazing a trail. Love the image.

Clairealex

I managed to miss quite a few appearances of this project--a belated I like what you did to my starter, Quilterinmotion ! I've really enjoyed thw whole process. I am getting ready to make my final addition soon.

Quilterinmotion

Clairealex , I know what you mean about missing parts. I missed seeing some of the steps along the way too. It was confusing to find where to look for them I thought.

I look forward to seeing everyone's finished projects.

Charwirfs

Your addition to Chandra's block is brilliant...in more ways then one. I am taking yours to the PO today after I snap and post a photo. Are you traveling or settled in again?

Quilterinmotion

We will be there tomorrow noon. We're staying overnight half-way through the trip so hubby can rest so tomorrow is our ETA. Can't wait to see it!

Quilterinmotion

HawkFan , thanks. I am glad to know you think it was right on target. I always question myself; think too much I guess. Just got with the first instinct, they taught us that when we were students but I tend to forget it I guess.

HawkFan

I think a lot of us second guess ourselves. That's one reason I love this site-getting feedback from like-minded quilters. You are very creative

Quilterinmotion

HawkFan , and you are very sweet and also very creative too. I love all your work.
