Description

My seven year old daughter Becca, loves to shop for fabric with me....whenever I get new fabric -she somehow gets new fabric too! And wouldn't you know that whenever I sit down at the sewing machine, she wants to sew too! It kind of drives me crazy:)

I finally told her to go through her fabric and pick out something to sew into a quilt. She chose a white/gray fat eighths bundle that she got at  Wal-Mart a year or two ago.  She brought that to me and wanted to sew the fat eighths together...I suggested cutting them into strips and making rail fence blocks. I added some of the yellow & gray fabric to make it a little bigger. She did the sewing at the machine, while I did the cutting and ironing. She's learned how to seam rip too! Which is not her favorite...she shed a few tears over seam ripping...but I'm trying to teach her that the more accurate we are -the better the quilt will be. And of course I told her I've seam ripped hundreds of times and probably shed a few tears myself!

This has been a fun collaborative effort.

*** I want to make a note that the blocks originally were to be 6 1/2....but I had to trim them up to 6 inch blocks unfinished...so while my daughter did an awesome job...it wasn't perfect by any means! I didn't have her seam rip and resew unless it was WAY off! Which quite a few were...hence the tears. I didn't intend to leave the impression that a 7 year old completed what you see in the pictures herself....I hope I haven't.

This is wonderful! I love the gray and yellow combination and this is so cool that you're teaching your daughter to sew.

Carolmarie Yes - I was really surprised at how well she did with the sewing machine...i have my old Singer in the closet - maybe it's time to give it to her!

I would never have guessed that a 7-year-old made this quilt! I clicked on it because I liked it so much. :) What a great project to work on with your daughter.

It's great that you're showing her ways to make things work (like trimming) that aren't what they're supposed to be but will work with some adjustment. I know that's been important for me :)

This is beautiful and the memories the two of you will have will last a life time. And you did it in my favorite colors.
