Description

After I finished piecing ^sweet-life-in-pb-j (pattern is from Simply Retro by Camille Roskelley), I decided to use all those little triangles which were cut from the flying geese and snowball blocks. I've never done that before (usually I just toss those little pieces into the trash)...but this time, I took some advice from Camille Roskelley and quickly stitched those cut off edges together as I went. I ended up with a huge pile of half square triangles. Some of them I plan on using on the back of the quilt...but others I decided to play with to design a pillow which would coordinate with the quilt.

This is what I ended up with - an 18" X 18" pillow which is a diamond pattern. Each block was trimmed down to 2.5" square before piecing and then I used a thin strip of one of the solid-reading fabrics from the collection and a hefty border of Bella unbleached white.

The back is pieced with leftover scraps and includes a hidden zipper (yup, I'm addicted to those!).

I quilted the front with an echo, straight line stitch which accentuates the pattern of the pillow.

The pillow is bound with Bella Teal (9900-87) which I also plan on using on the back of the Sweet Life quilt as it goes perfectly with the PB&J collection.

Mymble

Love this one too- really pretty- may be my favorite one so far in your fabulous pillow parade :))))

True

Holy moly you are a pillow making woman! Love this one and how you made use of the scraps!

Terrysim

It's beautiful! And extra special to know it was made from scraps. Do you have a link for the hidden zipper technique? I'd love to try it on my next pillow.

Caribousmom

True LOL - yes, I'm on a pillow roll. They are so fun to make...and fast! Thanks for the comment :)

Mymble Thanks, Margaret - I really had fun designing this one - and I was so happy ro find that solid blue as it works well with this collection.

Terrysim Thank you! I am using the instructions found in Pretty in Patchwork: Holidays for the paper pieced Polar Bear Pillow (Greetings from Antarctica)...if you have the book, it is on page 94-98. I have been adapting the pattern for different pillows...but the construction of the hidden zipper is the same. I'm beginning to think I should write a tutorial from their pattern, explaining how to adapt to different sizes since so many people keep asking me how to make these!!!

Caribousmom

Terrysim Okay - I found a tutorial on Sew Mama Sew which is VERY similar to what I am doing (although not exactly the same way of constructing...it looks the same when finished). Here it is: http://www.sewmamasew.com/2011/02/add-a-zipper-to-your-pillow/

True

Yes you should write a tutorial!! And what pattern or instructions are you using for the binding (The patterns and books I have looked at do not show it looking like yours and I like yours!)

Caribousmom

True I am also following the instructions in the Pretty in Patchwork book for the binding on that very same pillow. They have you cut a very wide (3.5") strip to make the binding. You put the front and back WRONG SIDES together and pin, then stitch the binding on as you would a quilt.

Caribousmom

True Okay - I've decided that the next pillow I make, I will take detailed photos as I go and put together a tutorial (giving credit to the those at Pretty in Patchwork for the basic instructions). Don't think that will happen before my trip...but you never know!

True

Caribousmom Now I am happy;-). I just read someone else's instructions and while I think I can figure it out they are not super clear. Will keep looking. And since reading directions/patterns in never my strong suit I also need to see both the zipper and binding as they all come together!

True

Oh and thank you:-)

Caribousmom

True LOL - I promise lots of photos :)

True

Caribousmom Just checked my library system again and the now have that book as well...so just requested it!

Caribousmom

True yay!

Skynme

This is lovely!!! It turned out so great!

Caribousmom

Skynme thank you!!!!

Terryt1955

You make it look so easy but I'm sure there was a little time that went into planning this pillow! When I see it done I think, yeah, now I could follow that but NEVER would I come up with it on my own. So yes, when you get back I'm holding you to that pictoral tutorial!!! Oh did I tell you that I LOVE this pillow. Every little thing down to that amazing blue binding. Lovely!!

Terrysim

Caribousmom - Thank you, thank you, thank you! It looks like a great tutorial. I'd love to see yours, too, if you have time to do one!

Caribousmom

Terrysim You're welcome! See my comment below to Terry re: the tutorial :)

Terryt1955 LOL. Thank you! I actually sat down today and wrote the tutorial...BUT, I have to make another pillow so I can take photos of it as I go. If I can, I'll get it up in the next week - otherwise it will probably be October.

Terryt1955

You rock!!!

How did I miss this one? It's beautiful also. Maybe you should start a pillow swap! I, of course, would like to be your partner :)

Caribousmom

cally68 LOL - thanks! A pillow swap would be fun (although I have learned from experience that mailing a pillow with the insert is costly as it is too large...so maybe a pillow COVER swap!! LOL)

cally68

Pillow cover swap! I like it! I'll be posting a photo of my pillow that matches my Sea Dreams quilt later tonight.

Caribousmom

cally68 oooh, looking forward to seeing it!

Terryt1955

I'd be up for a Pillow COVER swap for sure although after seeing yours and cally68 I need to step up my game.
Looking forward to your tutorial Wendy. I'm hoping that I have just the right strips left over from the baby quilt I'm making to make a pillow. BUT, you need to get ready for your adventure 1st and I have to make my quilt!

Caribousmom

Terryt1955 I'm doing a lot of stuff for my adventure - no worries :) BUT, I can't organize and purchase and scurry around 24-7....there still has to be sewing time! We'll see about a swap - maybe in 2014. Can't deal with that right now!

Terryt1955

I'm on it. THANKS!!!

Terryt1955

Wow that was an incredible tutorial. I can't imagine how long it must have taken! But it's pinned and waiting for me to refer to on a regular basis. Thanks so much!

HawkFan

Fantastic detail in your tutorial. Wow! Thanks for doing that

Caribousmom

Terryt1955 You're welcome - happy pillow making!

HawkFan You're welcome! I'm glad you found it detailed - I wanted to be sure to include everything (especially the parts that I had to learn as I went!)

Terrysim

Just commented on your tutorial post but I'll say it again: Thank you!!! You are a very good writer in addition to being a talented quilter!

Caribousmom

Terrysim Thank you SO much for the kind words! blush
