Description

Just a quick project to work on when my other, more complex quilt gets to me. Not really using a pattern - just cutting 10-inch square blocks to make the HSTs. Most of the quilt will be the dark blue (V&Co) fabric with the solid orange but I will have one stripe that's the dark blue and lighter blue combo.

Sept 21, 2013 - top is finished. This will be backed with Kasbah (midnight) by Amy Butler and the binding will be a blue/orange peppered cotton.

Jan 19, 2014 - finally finished this lap quilt. I normally do most of my work in the basement and no pets are allowed down there but I often hand sew binding in the family room upstairs. One of our cats, Phoebe, who is decidedly NOT a lap cat was almost obsessed with it. I think three times while I was working on it she hopped in my lap and settled in. I should re-name this Phoebe's quilt. I found her in a gutter when she was a kitten and it's taken her 2 years to get this comfortable with me. It's a work in progress.

Quilt has found a home on the back of my family room couch. I played around with the photo exposure, etc because the lighting in bad in that room but you can kind of see how the quilt looks now that it's washed and dried. I did an "organic" straight-line quilting that followed the lines of the chevron. I varied the spacing between quilting lines.

Finished top. Sunlight shining through the trees makes it look tie-dyed in spots
Most of the quilt will be this color combo
I will have one "accent" chevron that's the light blue with the dark blue

You do have my address for when this is done right?;-). I just love the colors and fabrics...wow this will be gorgeous!

Terryt1955

Such a beautiful color combination and how can you ever go wrong if V&Co is in the mix! I'm excited to see this chevron in the large scale too.Does it go together quickly?

HawkFan

True - very cute! I know how you love your V&Co fabric!

HawkFan

Terryt1955 - Yep, I started with the V&Co print and picked other fabrics to coordinate. Our local Ben Franklin is closing so right now their fabric is 30% off. It's hard not to buy up all the V&Co

Terryt1955

At 30% go for it! You'll kick yourself if you don't. Plus you don't have to pay for shipping.

HawkFan

Terryt1955 - I got some. When it goes to 40% I'll probably go back and see what's left. They had a surprising amount left so far. They're also still getting new stuff in - not sure how that works...I was able to pick up some fat quarters of Eclectic Elements too

Terryt1955

So if they're going out of business does that mean you're not going to have any fabric store nearby?

True

HawkFan OMG what a sale...I just got some of Tim Holtz's fabric in mail!

HawkFan

Terryt1955 - no, we actually have a good dozen within 40 minutes of here that are all great. That's part of the reason I have such a big stash - I go to them and can't resist.

HawkFan

True - it surprises me that there's still so much good stuff left. They have some Kona solids (but no white) that I picked up too. I'll probably keep going back as the % off goes up until they don't have anything left that I'm interested in

True

HawkFan a dozen!!??? OMG I would be broke...

Terryt1955

How far away from Evanston are you? Maybe it's time I visit my youngest!

HawkFan
Have fun adding to your stash. We had 2 LQS go out of business last year and I tink I went a little overboard. Naw, you can never have too much fabric.

HawkFan

True - tell me about it :moneywithwings: and I really am not exaggerating. They all have their unique character and a couple of them are small (like the one that offered the class with Vanessa) but there are a lot here. Expand out another hour and you're at least double that.

HawkFan

Terryt1955 - we're a little under 4 hours away. We go to the Chicago area on a regular basis. Seriously, if you do visit, let me know.

HawkFan

Drnic2c Unfortunately, I have the same attitude. Now I have to figure out where to store it! smile

Drnic2c

HawkFan
Yes, space can be an issue. My husband feels we have fabric everywhere.

Terrysim

True and HawkFan : I just got back home from visiting MY youngest in Evanston! So if there really ever is a Threadbias meetup in the area, let me know!

Terrysim

P.S. I just finished a quilt with that same blue flower V and Co. fabric. I love it (and all their fabrics)!

HawkFan

Terrysim - a meetup would be fun wouldn't it! I love the V&Co fabric too and just got to meet Vanessa recently. She's a hoot.

Terrysim

Cool! How did that happen?

HawkFan

Terrysim - She taught a class at my LQS. She lives in my area

True

This looks awesome...you were fast!!!

HawkFan

True - the blocks are huge so it is a fast project.

Terryt1955

COngrats on the finish here. It's beautiful!

Terrysim , does that mean your daughter is a "Wildcat"? Claire graduated last year but she is working in the area still until February.

Terrysim

Terryt1955 - No, my son is there working, went to college in MN. Sure seems like we have a lot on common besides our names! smile

Caribousmom

Oh my goodness - how did I miss this beauty?!?!? Love it...such great, bold colors! And Phoebe is beautiful too :)

Skynme

This is so bright and pretty! You did a great job on it.

True

Love it...please wash and dry before you mail it to me ok?;-). And Phoebe is so pretty... Gimli is in love!!

HawkFan

True should I wash and dry phoebe before I send her too?

True

HawkFan LOL that would be most helpful;-)

HawkFan

True she's a longhair and I started her as a kitten with baths so she actually tolerates it. I don't subject her to a hair dryer though. Probably freak her out.

True

HawkFan ok I am impressed! I cannot even get two of mine to let me trim their nails!!

HawkFan

Caribousmom Thanks Wendy (& Phoebe says thanks too). I loved that it was such a quick top to make!

HawkFan

Skynme Thank you Erica! It's nice to have a finish so early in the year. Helps motivate me to get more projects done. Now I have to tackle a tote like you did

HawkFan

True She's the only one I ever give a bath too because she really does need it. Nails, however, are another thing. That's a challenge with her. The other one is pretty good about nails but he's more of a dog than a cat (he plays fetch).

Mymble

Really stunning- love it! Phoebe is too adorable- she has such a "you know you love me" look on her face. We have rescue cats too- they steal your heart!

HawkFan

Mymble Thanks Margaret. Phoebe really is a spoiled princess so you're right about "the look"

True

Love this finish it looks awesome...quilts are cat magnets I swear...Phoebe has very good taste!

Mymble

True Yes, she has my address:)

Terrysim

Congrats on this finish. It's beautiful!! I'm looking right now at the quilt on my couch made with the same V and Co. blue flower fabric. Love it!!

HawkFan

Thanks Terrysim - I'm a big fan of the V&Co fabrics so I based this quilt around that fabric.
