So this is what happens when my DH takes an interest in my sewing. He saw the blocks I made for the October bee and "commissioned" me to make a quilt for his grandmother Fannie. He wanted blue and yellow flower print. When I saw Sunnyside I knew it would work fine. This is what I have so far, these little blocks are a lot of sewing. To save time I used a jelly roll of sunnyside and a jelly roll of moda white so I only had to cut 2.5 squares(yep I'm lazy) LOL. He wants boarders on these. I don't know what color I will use yet but I'm thinking a solid for sure. More pics to come....
10/20 making more blocks. Hubby is not loving it, and is making me question my blocks and color choices. Honesty needed, is this an "ugly baby" or am I still on track for a pretty quilt.
10/27 after taking a nice break to do some fun Holliday projects, I managed to force myself to get all of fannies grannies trimmed...but look at that cute centerpiece lol. Now it's time for bed but I should be able to have all the sashing done by this weekend...maybe 11/2 all the blocks have been sashed and put together. Got the backing fabric ready to go
11/3 What was I thinking...seriously, I blame it on the massive migraine I had today and the flashes of lights it was setting off in my eyeballs. This is the largest quilt I have ever tried to quilt on my machine. I think the poor thing is going to start smoking and blow up any minute. Then to top it off I tried a new FMQ design that I have never done before and didn't try out first....so this quilt might be done sometime around Christmas 2017...maybe
Love these fabrics in these blocks and how sweet of you!
True Thanks! I'm loving them too, but I don't like my DH idea for the boarder around each block. I think I might just do what I want and then ask forgiveness after I finish it.
Skynme Does he mean sashing? If yes it will create an easier way to put these together as there will be no matching of all those seams...I think most pictures I have seen of this has sashing? But you could choose not to of course;-). But if you add sashing nd a cornerstone between each block you will make your own "job" much easier.
True he wants a baby blue 2.5 boarder around each block. I am going to do sashing between each block in white, then a scrappy boarder around the quilt. I don't like the idea of all that baby blue in there. I'm not going to tell him though LOL
True this is more what I want to do with the quilt: http://www.magpiequilts.com/2013/02/granny-square-quilt.html?m=1
Love your idea and I would think once he sees what you've done it'll be "what's not to love".
Skynme , your blocks are lovely. Fanny will love her Granny quilt, whether you use borders or sashing, or none.
Skynme , maybe this tutorial will help the grannies come along faster? http://www.modabakeshop.com/2013/02/granny-square-quilt.html I think it's the same person who did the tutorial for our hive!
I love sunnyside; it looks great as granny squares!
Joke Thank you! That is the link for the tutorial I was using.
I think it would come along much faster if a certain DH wouldn't keep wanting me to stop sewing every 5 minutes and watch TV/Movies, and hang out with him LOL.
Absolutely not an ugly baby. I think your choices are beautiful. What doesn't he like about it? You've taken a pastel route - does he like brighter colors better? when you've finished the blocks, maybe if you look at different options for sashing that might help him like it better but I think everyone here will agree it's beautiful
HawkFan thanks! I think he doesn't really care for some of the combinations I did. I don't love all of them either but the work we'll together. Only 5 blocks to go, maybe he will change his mind
I think this is absolutely gorgeous! When doing the same block but in different fabrics I always like some better than others but find in end they all work and are needed. Wonder same as HawkFan does he like brighter colors? And I am betting most grandmothers would love this and these colors.
HawkFan Carolmarie True Thanks ladies! Honestly I think he doesn't like the mix of cools and warms, plus there are a lot of flowers in this one. I had to do two super scrappy blocks, but its hard to tell unless you look really close. Once I get the sashing done I will post more pics. I think after this I will take a break on Grannies...unless the Nov Queen wants them as well LOL then I suppose I will have to granny some more :D.
That is an adorable quilt! He must be colored blind...!
This is lovely- I think you have to take a "big picture" approach to scrappy...and it can take some getting used to so maybe it just needs to grow on your DH...but truly- this will be a beautiful and well loved quilt!
These are great. Had to laugh because I used Sunnyside to make a granny square for my hive 3 block.
Love the Halloween star in the background!!
This is gorgoeus with your sashing added...his hubby seeing the beauty yet?!
True He is at Football right now, but I should have the top all done and basted when he gets home tonight. I'm sure he will start to see it now...I think its looking really pretty so far
very pretty. another winner
What a pretty Fannie Grannie! (I love that her name rhymes with the block!). And the white sashing is perfect "glue" for all the blocks. I think the fabric is very appropriate for a grandmother and I'm sure she's going to absolutely me moved to tears.
It is so pretty!
I agree! It's gorgeous. Any Granny, named Fanny or otherwise, would cherish this quilt. The white cements it all together. Way to go!
It's beautiful! I am sure your Fanny will adore this Granny :)
I so want to make one of these quilts, especially now that I see your done!
Way to go,almost there! You really are cranking out this quilt!
Just when I think I cannot love this quilt any more than I already do you add a scrappy border...OMG She is going to so love this quilt!
I just love you scrappy border. Great addition
I'm with everyone else - absolutely love the scrappy border. Hang in there!
Love your scrappy border! And your orange peel quilting! Just think though, by the time you finish the whole quilt, you'll be a pro at the design Are you using the same colour thread all over or will you change it for each block?
Skynme Now see....doesn't that border just make it stand out that much more? I knew you could do it. You just keep asking my for my opinions and I'll have your queen size quilts a California king in no time
I agree with everyone else. That scrappy border is awesome and really makes those blocks stand out! Very nice job on the clamshell quilting too.
Well it is well before 2017 and it is done and gorgeous! Love it
True thank you! I had to stop procrastinating and just do it. I like how it turned out but I'm happy it's finished.
A beautiful finish!! Love the pops of dark blue and how you used it for the binding. And the scrappy border makes such a beautiful frame!
I love how it's pulled together, despite some of your earlier concerns. Look so amazing!
What a gorgeous finish!
This is beautiful! I love the colours, and the white sashing sets it off perfectly.
Love the quilt! Now, please excuse the personal intrusion here...but be VERY careful about the "flashes of light" in your eyesight- I had them and they turned out to be detatched retinas- and after laser surgery I am fine, but I have to have regular check ups now because of something called "latticing" in my retinas. I sincerely hope you do not have anything like that but if it continues ...please see a vision specialist. Okay...mom talk over...and again the quilt is fabulous!
