Description

When we were all on vacation for my mom's 90th birthday my 13 year old nephew, Scott, asked if I would make him a quilt...and of course I said yes.  I had recently seen and pinned this quilt ^sparkle-plenty from another threader (+jenny-e) and immediately thought of it as he told me he loves bright colors.  I thought using the black as she had with his bright colors would give him a quilt good for now but also good for him as he grows up.  When I showed him some pictures of some quilts to see what he liked it was one he picked out so I knew where I was headed!  I would like to try and give it to him for Christmas (we shall see) so started it today.

The name come from the song "Mr. Knickerbocker" (from Barney...sorry but true) as when Scott was little he loved that song and for the longest time we would call him Scott John Boppity Bop. He would have us sing it to him over and over and over...

I wanted a larger quilt so my individual squares and HST measure 5" finished.  A lot of the fabric is by Blank Quilting but I do not know the name of it.  I bought it and the black sketch and then supplemented from my stash.

Here is the tutorial I used to figure out what size squares I needed to cut to get the correct size HST's I also decided to cut them a bit larger than needed to ensure no problems when squaring them up.  I did use both methods as for some wanted four of each and others only two.  Figure will have a few left over but gave me options when putting it all together, color wise.

Update 10-27-13 Goal for this weekend was have HST's trimmed and the quilt on the design wall, so I could move things around as I live with it this week... and I made it.  I included pictures of all my "helpers" since 4 out of the 6 joined me.  Two were way more "helpful" than the other two and one in particular was very hands/paws on;-)  If you notice an errors in my block placement please let me know!!

Update 11-10-13 Goal for this weekend was the top would be done and it is...onward I go.  Have extra HST" so will do two large pillows with them...one is included so I remember what I came up with for when I sew it:-)

Update 11-23-13  Done and way before Christmas...such a relief.  Now onto finishing the 26 x 26" pillow to go with it.  I used variegated thread, which is hard to see, but looks great on front and back.  I was going to do organic straight line quilting going one way.  BUT after I got preliminary quilting done got worried this is going to a 13 yo boy who will be very hard on it and I was worried it would not be enough to help hold it all together.  But I was so not ripping out what I had already done so I did what I always do and made it work with my new version of "quilt however you feel like it;-)"

Skynme

Oh this is going to be amazing. Love all the beautiful bright colors. Cant wait to see it done

True

Skynme thank you... I am a touched overwhelmed with the amount of trimming of HST's I will be doing but think it will be well worth it:-)

jansquilting

True What pretty colors - so much fun!

True

jansquilting Thank you...it is fun to work with these fabrics and colors!

Momver

That is going to be so nice! Great colors. Do you have one of those Bloc-Loc squares to trim all those half squares to size? Seen them at shows but have not invested in them yesterday

True

Momver Thank you. I do not have one of those rulers but know others have said they are wonderful! I have not done a lot (no idea why) with HST's so have never purchased one...I am using my creative grids 6.5" square ruler to do the trimming.

HawkFan

Wow - love the colors of this quilt. That quilt is on my to-do list too.

Clairealex

I like the pattern and i like your colorful fabrics. I also use creative grids to square up HSTs. the only thing that would make it easier would be a rotating cutting mat. But I'd rather work a little harder and buy more fabric. :-)

True

Clairealex Thank you and I do have a rotating mat I have had for quite awhile! And love it:-). But so hear you on doing the work and buying more fabric instead!!

True

HawkFan I just made all the black and color HST and it was so fun to press them and have the black side up and then see what color was underneath it...it takes very little to entertain me;-). Want to hit myself at moment as I am on 5.5" strip away from having enough of the charcoal sketch so have to order so more:-(

Sewhappy

Going to be fabulous!! Love the colours and fabric you are using, and the contrast with the black. I know my son would love it!

HawkFan

Oh no, I hate when that happens - you're on a roll and then screeching halt because you run out.

Caribousmom

Another winner, I can already tell!!!

True

Caribousmom thank you it is fun colors to work with...have never done one where put it together totally on a design wall before (not sure that makes sense) so will be a new experience.

Terryt1955

Holy moly that's a whole lot of HST's you've got to make!! But I can see why you are so excited when you're dealing with all these great colors. This is going to be the star quilt of all star quilts! And I'm sure when you make the label with Boppity Bop on it Scott will have the biggest smile.

ArloDeanQuilts

This looks like a really fun pattern!! I love the colors!!

True

Terryt1955 I have been thinking same thing about the number of HST's!! Just finished sew and cut apart last of them. And black and color ones are pressed others still need that done and then onto squaring them up! Thanks and I do think he will like it and the name:-)

True

ArloDeanQuilts I do too...we will see how I feel about it once get to the sewing it part;-)

Mymble

Just gorgeous...he is going to flip over this. I love the design and the colors...just perfect!

True

Mymble thank you...

Skynme

Looks great! It didn't take you long to knock those HST's out. He is going to love this.

True

Skynme thank you it felt like forever trimming them! Terryt1955 is my hero and she told me to find the Bloc Loc HST ruler and I got lucky and my LQS (which never has stuff) had one in stock! I got it and it really was a life saver.

Creamcity

So pretty!

Terryt1955

Looks like you have placed all the HST's correctly. Congrats on finishing them all this weekend!! It looks great, just like the inspirational one.

True

Terryt1955 Thank you for checking my placement...I was beginning to see sideways and then there was the kitten who thought he should take things down AFTER I put them up! I would not have gotten them done without your help so thank you.

Quilt455

This perfect for a 13 yr old. I am sure he loves it. Is this the first time you have worked with black? I have never done a quilt with black. I do love how the black makes the colors pop, pop, pop.

Mymble

No misplacement that I can see...just a lot of awesomeness;)))...and your "helpers" are too too adorable;)

twistedandloose

I love the black and bright colors. Nice job! It's an "attention getter".

HawkFan

It looks beautiful on your design wall! I'm definitely going to have to make one of these. I love the special treat of getting to see your helpers! My helpers aren't allowed in the basement where my sewing room is so they only get to help when I bring things upstairs.

True

Quilt455 thank you and yes it is the first time I have done a whole quilt with black (did my center for Round Robin but that was just the center part). I really like it but I am glad I selected a tone on tone versus a solid black as it person it makes it less "black" not sure that makes sense but helps break up the color some. I have say seeing on my design wall it is so different than anything I have ever done in many ways so lots of new experiences. And I have to keep reminding myself this is for a 13 yo boy and that in itself is a huge difference. I have some extra HST's (I knew I would but was easier to put together using the cheater method and deal with extras) so may buy a couple of big pillows and make covers for them... we shall see time wise and what I come up with as move forward!

True

Mymble thank you... my helpers crack me up...all of them followed me when I came upstairs and it is so funny to see what they then do...two immediately laid down and fell asleep, one kept walking back and forth with me (yellow lab) and the kitten tried to remove everything he could reach!

True

twistedandloose thank you it sure stands out!

True

HawkFan thank you so much...I have never put a quilt together block by block like this one required so was mind boggling at moments. I think I will be sewing it together in sections of 16 versus row by row. Think for me will work better. And quilting is a true "family affair" as they all get involved ALL the time (well one is always out side hunting so she is never around but the rest "participate"!!

Caribousmom

fabulous!!!

True

Caribousmom thanks I am glad to have it done...colors were wearing on me:-)

Terryt1955

Great job Mary!!! Now on to quilting. Oh Boy!

Caribousmom

Mary it came out so cute! Love it!!

HawkFan

Fabulous finish!

True

Caribousmom thank you I am soooo glad to be done...

True

HawkFan thanks I think he will like it...was sure a different quilt in so many ways for me...so fun.

Terryt1955

You are forever going to be the Best Auntie ever! Love the variegated quilting. it makes it so whimsical! What a fabulous Christmas present.

True

Terryt1955 thank you! I just asked Andrew if he thinks Scott will like it...he said "guess so" I was like WHAT!!!??? Andrew does not like how bright it is BUT I keep reminding him that is the one thing Scott requested;-)

Joke

Wow! I love howbright it is, and I had to laugh at naming it after a Barney song, but it's very fitting with your story! How did you do your signature piece? It looks like the kind I've been wanting to do, but I'm unsure of how to get it to line up just right when putting the backing together?

True

Joke Thank you I hope he likes the name and the quilt! Here is a tutorial and step 8 is how I do my labels. You sew it on on top of backing before do binding and then I hand sew top, folded edge down. Let me know of this does not make sense http://www.felicityquilts.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Joke

Thanks for the link! So is it like a pocket?

True

Joke Yes good way to describe it...and then when you hand sew top part down it close it up.

Joke

Sounds easy enough! I really need to start labelling the things I make!!

Mymble

Looks fantastic- and "quilt however you feel like it" looks like a good approach to me.

True

Joke I never did labels until Rebecca posted about doing them this way...it is so easy. I print off what I want to say from computer (my handrwriting is terrible) and then use these great markers I have and trace over it. Pressing makes it permanent and then I just sew them on super easy!

True

Mymble LOL and thank you!

Quilterinmotion

So this is the quilt! Wonderful, colorful and the black makes it a lifetime quilt. Great job, True. Lucky nephew. Aren't we lucky to have boys who love quilts???

True

Quilterinmotion thank you...I loved that he asked for one it made my day. I cannot wait for him to open it...

Justine

love it!! awesome colors!!

True

Justine thanks!
