Description

I made a few of these blocks as my potential pick for my month as queen of my Newbee hive. Ultimately I went with wonky houses instead but I had several of these blocks. A friend recently had a (9 pound, 1 ounce) baby boy and they are (U of Iowa) Hawkeye fans - colors are black and gold. I thought I'd whip up a few more blocks and make this in to a baby quilt for them. I'm going to sash with a light gray and use black cornerstones. Not sure yet about a border - I'm thinking maybe a piano key border but I'll wait to get the top together before I decide. Of course, with the baby being so big, I'd better hurry or it won't be big enough for him! By the way, his mom isn't even 5 feet tall!

The blocks are laid out on my over-sized ottoman which often doubles as a (horizontal) design wall

Jan 6, 2014 - finished piecing the top. Pieced the back using a square of minkee fabric I got on clearance and a black and white print.

Jan 12, 2014 - the quilt is finished. I used black thread to quilt it and a striped binding. The binding is actually two different fabrics but they're so similar, unless you look closely, you can't see the difference and I alternated them. I didn't have enough of either to bind the whole quilt. It's been washed and if I get a chance to take another picture before I gift it, I will but it's going to her tomorrow.

Skynme

Love th bright yellow in this one.

HawkFan

Skynme - I must have rearranges these a dozen times to try and spread out the brights and darks (because I didn't want to make any more blocks)

True

Love these colors together and love this as a baby quilt!

HawkFan

Thanks, True - I love this color combo too. I like a bright color with black and gray, like pink or teal or yellow.

Terryt1955

What a great quilt for Hawkeye fans! They are going to flip when they see this. Maybe they have a future linebacker and he can bring it to college with him and hang it on his dorm wall!

Quilt455

This is a great quilt for Hawkeye fans! Plus my favorite colors right now. I love to see polk at dots in any quilts.

HawkFan

Terryt1955 - the parents have joked that he's a future linebacker. Now I just have to get it done before he goes off to college!

HawkFan

Quilt455 - I have lately discovered a love for polkadots and they make their way in to an awful lot of my projects.

Caribousmom

There is just something about black and yellow that is so appealing! This is a great quilt, Audrey!

Mymble

Looks great and the border you added is perfect!

HawkFan

Caribousmom Thanks Wendy! I so agree about the color combo which is why I love your Metro and Playground pillows in Simply Style.

HawkFan

Mymble Thank you Margaret - I went through a lot of possibilities before I settled on that border design.

Quilt455

Love how this came out. Just love blocks and colors

HawkFan

Quilt455 Thanks Cathie - now I just need to quilt it. I spray baste but I need to be able to air out the space so the weather needs to cooperate.

True

Great finish! How did you mark or follow your lines for the diagonal quilting?

HawkFan

True - I eyeballed it. I was too lazy to mark it smile If it had looked bad on the first one I would have ripped it out and marked the quilt but I thought it came out OK.

True

HawkFan it looks great I am impressed!!!

HawkFan

True thanks Mary!

Gail

Love these colors - great for a baby! - Go Hawkeyes!

HawkFan

Thanks, Gail - I'm giving it to them today

Mymble

Wow- your finish is spectacular- this is some baby quilt!

HawkFan

Mymble Thanks Margaret. Just gave it to the mom and she was thrilled. It's nice to get this out of my stack. Two more quilts just need binding attached.

Quilterinmotion

I love the black, white and yellow so I immediately thought "Wow!" when I saw your baby quilt. Your friend will be very happy with it. I'm surprised you are willing to let it go, though. Nice combinations and a beautiful finish.

HawkFan

Mymble I do feel like I'm in the zone but by the time the fabrics get here for the binding, who knows...

HawkFan

Quilterinmotion - I knew we were on the same page with the color scheme since that's what you're using for your Sugar Cube blocks. I think I would like them even if they weren't our school colors. She did love it which made it easier to part with!

Quilterinmotion

I think you would like them, too, HawkFan . We do seem to be on the same page often! smile smirk

cedacanthus

This is beautiful, very striking! I love these colours!

HawkFan

Thanks cedacanthus - this color combo seems to be popular lately
