Description

Scrappy Churn Dash Blocks for Hive #1!  One year has gone by of my first bee and its my turn to be Queen. Several other hives have done churn dash blocks, but not #1. I've liked the variations on the block and wanted one of my own, so have picked it for December.  You can use the Crazy Mom Quilts tutorial - link in the tutorial space below, EXCEPT that I would like the churn dash triangles to be one fabric and the rectangles to be another fabric.  I'm looking for contrast between the churn dash and background, with the background 'reading' white or quite light (any white, cream, small dot, text, light print) and the churn dash parts red (any red: Christmas red, beet red, tomato red, flag red...) and/or pink and/or orange.  I made some samples to show something of the variations in my vision. The block will be 12 1/2 inches unfinished.

Dec. 17th:  4+4 photo shows Sarah's block top row left, True's block top row right, Rebecca's center and bottom right. Loving these!
Dec. 24th   Blocks rearranged to include Terry's upper right and lower left, and two reverse blocks snuck in there. Currently I'm aiming for four across and five blocks down.  With six hive members to go, I'll be almost there :)

Jan. 3: Yea! a pair came today, two are in the mail, and only 3 after that.
Jan. 16: The block from +strandkorbtraum came today.  I'll have to get the blocks back on the design wall soon for a new photo and layout.

March 15: No additional blocks had arrived and I was stalled waiting on some fabric for another project, so I started making more churn dash block. In order to continue the variety as if they came from hive members, I went through my stash asking what various relatives and friends would make with my stash.
March 21: Top finished, backing selected (two prints from Flirt)
August 9: finished, binding in Kona Rich Red.

Yay,it's finally your turn to be Queen! This is going to be so much fun making this scrappy churn dash. Scrappy but not crappy!

Terryt1955

Oh and thank you for getting this up early so we can get it done before the insanity starts!

True

This will be fun! I like your colour choices.

Charwirfs

No bad choices here. Great pattern and nice color theme.

Kat

(I realize it has an extra colour, but I really like the part about the HSTs.)

Readerowl

It is very pretty!

True

These look great together!

Kat

Seeing this I will get mine finished and mailed tomorrow.

ArloDeanQuilts

These are going to make a really nice quilt.

Terryt1955

Mailed mine yesterday in the morning so maybe it will get there tomorrow or the next day!

Aizome

Super cute! heart heartpulse tangerine (No orange hearts--had to go with a tangerine!)

Readerowl

Aizome love the tangerine in there! Thanks. I'll always think of that when I enjoy my quilt.

HawkFan

They look great together. Those reverse pieces really add something too!

Readerowl

HawkFan I like them together too, and couldn't resist adding a couple reverse blocks.

Aizome

Sewbusy64

looks great I love it

Terryt1955

I missed when you posted the finished top. It looks great!! I'm trying to decide what block to choose for making a red & white quilt and remembered your HIve #1 choice but hadn't seen the end result. Love!

Readerowl

Terryt1955 I have so many red and white quilt projects in my head (and on their own pinterest board) - this quilt doesn't completely satisfy my need for a red and white quilt, and I still have my own years accumulation of fabric put aside for it. So I'll be doing something one of these days.

Readerowl

Terryt1955 Forgot to add that this is now quilted and the binding stitched on the front - just waiting for a road trip or video marathon to hand stitch the binding to the back.

Terryt1955

Readerowl Haha I hear you on that needing time set aside to handsew the binding. I tend to wait for winter so I'm not sweating underneath the quilt while sewing.

Terryt1955

I saw a beautiful D4P last night done up in red & white. Such a simple block but man did it have great impact!

Caribousmom

Wow, Karen - this turned out beautifully! Love it! And love what you did on the back too.

True

WOW I just love this finished quilt...so bright, fresh and pretty!

Strandkorbtraum

Ohh It looks great - I couldn't remember having made a pink and red chrun dash block - but I could easily find mine, so I must have made it. It's great to see it finished.
I haven't finished either of my Bee quilts form 2013 though I am doing the bidning on one now.

Readerowl

Strandkorbtraum yours is easy to spot - it will be the favorite with my grandkids when they see it in a few days! Thanks.

Readerowl

Caribousmom the block on the back was "oops, I made one too many"

Readerowl

True thanks. As I was taking photos, someone asked if it was for sale! Not this one.

Caribousmom

Readerowl shhhhhh, don't tell anyone! It is a perfect addition :)

True

Readerowl Love it and that person had good taste!!

Charwirfs

Just lovely! Congratulations on another wonderful completed project. You are inspirational.

HawkFan
