Hive 5 - December: Rocky Mountain Puzzle by Menolly13

Rocky mountain puzzle block
In Progress

Hi ladies! After much deliberation, I have decided on the Rocky Mountain Puzzle block for my month as queen. I'm going to be making a lap quilt for myself to replace the very worn one I've been using since college. I'm thinking fun and feminine without being little girly or frilly. The block has a framed center square that would be perfect for showing off fun prints or quirky designs, so feel free to go wild. I have a soft spot for dandelion prints, non-cutesy cats, artsy prints, books, and anything related to cooking, sewing, drawing, or photography. I would request no holiday, religious, or over the top cutsey little kid prints, and please NO creepy crawly insects. *shudder*

Background fabric: Please use a low volume print that reads white or cream when looked at from across the room. A tone on tone white or cream would be fine too. I love text prints, swirly squiggles and dots if you happen to have any in your stash.

Main fabric: Please use something colorful enough to stand out well against the low volume background. I like jewel toned colors - bright but not overwhelmingly so. Some of my favorites are: pinks, maroon/burgundy, golden yellows, tangerine, teal, aqua, turquoise, lime, eggplant, chocolate brown, and gray. I'm not a fan of anything neon.

Center square frame: Please use something that will contrast well with the main fabric without being clashy. When in doubt, I find a gray or black print usually works nicely, but please feel free to be as colorful as you'd like.

I've written up a tutorial here. It's my first sewing tutorial, so please let me know if anything is unclear.

I would love it if you would include a siggy block. The one I would like is a mini version of the center block from the Rocky Mountain Puzzle. My plan is to add HST's to them once they get here to turn each siggy block into a mini Rocky Mountain Puzzle block to use on the back of the quilt.

I plan on turning the siggy squares into mini versions of the main block to use on the back.

Wow - this is going to be gorgeous

These look great, its going to be an amazing quilt.

True the block and love your fabric choices!! This will be amazing.

Inspired! I am eager to see what your hive comes up with. Your examples and instructions are wonderful.

Very nice. This would be a fun block to make! It will make a wonderful update for your well-worn lap quilt.

I was mentally sorting my stash, and I wondered: do butterflies count as "fun and feminine" or "creepy crawly"? I myself like to look at butterflies, but freak out if they land on me!

PurpleIris I don't mind butterflies, or dragonflies and ladybugs for that matter. I was thinking more of spiders and the like since I know there are a bunch of fabrics out recently that feature them. And I'm with you on the whole pretty to look at but don't land on me bit! :)

This is one of my favorite blocks right now, and I love your examples. Great choice!

Missriain Thanks! I was actually planning on doing something else for my month but kept coming back to this one. I decided to make a test block to see what I thought and that was all it took! :)

Can't wait to see what blocks you get. You've done some beautiful samples. There are so many fun fabrics to use with this block

I finished your blocks on Friday and have to say that I really (really~!) love this block.
Riain and I are trying to decide if we want to make one for her sister's wedding quilt because it has that center block we could fussy cut meaningful fabrics, but are afraid we'll like it too much to give away. :-)
I can't wait to see what other people end up giving you (and see what Riain ends up doing :-)
Will post pics in my studio after I get them taken (and clean up after two days of sewing~!)

emptysea I'm glad you enjoyed the block. I really like it, which is a good thing because I want to do a 48x60 layout so I'm going to need to make a few more myself. :)
I have the answer for the wedding quilt dilemma - make three of each block so you each can have a quilt! ;) Set it up assembly line style with one of you tackling the HST and the other doing the centers and you'll have them done in no time!

I finally posted the photos in my studio - mailing the blocks today~!
And great idea about the assembly line block making… We were pretty much doing that with the Rainbow Color Wheels we were making over the weekend. Very fun to do that one, too…

emptysea They are wonderful, thank you! I can't wait to see them in person!

This quilt is going to be amazing with all those fussy cuts! I can't wait to see it :)

Wow - this is the best series of blocks I have seen so far. They are amazing!

emptysea Thanks! I think so too. Everyone did a bang up job on their blocks! I can't wait to get it all put together!

very clever idea with the siggy blocks too!
