Description

My younger brother moved into his own apartment this year (within the last 6 months?) and being a 20-something, GUY, I'm assuming that he could probably use some home goods.

For Christmas this year I am making him a full/queen sized felted sweater blanket and a pair of coordinating pillowcases. My mom wrangled up some wool sweaters, etc. for me, included some family tartan. This batch is felting up in the dryer right now and I am going to start collecting some thrifted wool to supplement my stash.

12/18/2013 - I have 42 of my 9 patch blocks done (they will finish out at 10.5" once sewn together) each with the center block my grandfather's family tartan. I will need 64 total and I only have enough centers for 61 so the block on each corner of the blanket will have block with a charcoal grey center and I don't think it will be noticeable. If time allows, I am also going to do a 4 patch pieced border around the entire blanket, which I am going to play with tonight. I have a couple extra days to get this done since my family Christmas isn't until the 29th. Once I have it all assembled I am going to back and bind it with cotton like a traditional quilt, minus the batting.

12/29/2013 - Finished!! Yesterday I embroidered and attached the label and it is done just in time to gift tonight. It really did turn out beautifully, if it wasn't going to my brother, I would have a hard time giving it away at all.

What a fab sister you are! That's SOOO much work, and it's looking great!

Some of the patches are made from the ankles of socks knitted by the same grandfather, who would be tickled pink to know they were getting a second chance.

I love this. Such a cozy quilt. Your brother will be very pleased with this cool gift.

Speattle He loved it! It was really very beautiful in person and had a wonderful drape to it.

It is quite beautiful in photos too. Do some of the squares have ties in them? Or is that part of a print?

Speattle The center of each 9 patch block is a piece of family tartan (from a shirt my grandmother made for my grandfather about 45 years ago) and I tied the quilt at the center of all those patches.

Wonderful. I love to see and make tied quilts.
