Lauren's placemats by Yarnosophy
I've made a set of placemats for my niece and her boyfriend for Christmas. I've also sent them some Asian-style noodle bowls in white and blue that should match reasonably well.
I kept the quilting simple - just groups of straight lines. I like the simplicity of the design and I'm pretty happy with how they turned out, except for the way the lines of quilting pulled the fluff of the cotton batting through - it looks like lines of dust against the dark blue fabric. I haven't done a lot of quilting yet, and have only used the cotton batting for a couple of small projects with lighter fabrics, so I'm not sure if this is a common problem with cotton batting, or if I scored a fluffy lot, of if its some combination issue withe thread/needle size/batting/fabric.
Being an old-fashioned girl, I usually hand-sew the binding at the back, but I got brave and machine stitched down the binding on these - and I like it better than my hand-sewing! (And it was so much quicker!)
Fluff from cotton batting in stitch lines :(
