Description

I'm collecting some bits of dino fabric to make a quilt for a dinosaur loving Canadian friend for her birthday in June. Recently she moved into a new place with her boyfriend, and I made her a trivet with dino fabrics in a maple leaf pattern.

I'd like a basic pattern but I'm not sure what? Any suggestions??

I'm thinking about maple leaves again, maybe do a kind of modern maple quilt, though I'd prefer a pattern that doesn't use so much background fabric as I'd like the quilt to be full of dinosaurs! I'm aiming for a lap size.

10/1/14
My mum sent me a few pieces of dino fabrics that she had and last night I decided to do up a block. Big mistake since it was nearly bed time *sigh* I got the measurements all wrong on multiple cuttings. I think for this block I'll just use it on the back as the signature block or something! I also posted it to instagram and then realised my friend is following my instagram so would see it... but she hasn't yet. But maybe that's not a bad thing if she does, because if she comments maybe I can guess her reaction to how she would like it?!

24/2/14
Took a break from my February goals to do some 'just because' sewing and picked up this. I'd cut out all the pieces so I just had to sew them. It was nice doing some mindless sewing!! There's one block I have to fix because I cut the pieces too short.. coincidentally with the same fabric from my first block that I cut too thin. I'm not sure if I have enough left to use the same fabric now!

To make it bigger, I've been thinking of interspresing some 10" dino squares throughout, so maybe some of the larger prints that are cut off can show off their dinos.

I also know how I'm going to quilt it: a spiral! I had the idea when I was thinking of the scene in Jurassic Park when the T-Rex stomping creates the water ripples in the glass of water!

27/3/14
Got most of the top together! I still want to use the yellow footprint sashing fabric to do a thin inner border around the edges, and then I need to work out a larger border. I have a large piece of dino fabric that I was originally going to use for the backing (I now have something else for the back) but I'm not sure if it's enough for a border. I might be able to work it out if I do corner pieces in the border... not sure; will have to measure.

I'm a little annoyed that some of the sashing didn't match up though my husband said he didn't notice until I had pointed the spots out.

26/4/14
Added borders to the side to try and make it "wider" as it seemed a bit long. Now it's too wide, lol! After trialling some fabrics and asking my husband's opinion (which I ignored for my final decision... lol) I decided to use the "meteor" print from Tula Pink's Birds and the Bees line. Watch out dinosaurs, the meteors are coming!!!

Later: ok. now I'm thinking of unpicking the dino boarder and putting the meteors all the way around instead. Why didn't I think of this before I cut and stitched down the dino sides *sigh*

1/5/14
Added the meteor fabric on as a border. i was too lazy to unpick the dino border so left it. I think it would look better if I had taken it off but I figure in the end I've got nothing else to use the fabric for so it might as well stay on since I cut it to the border size :wink2: it's approx 80"x80" now. I need to piece my backing together and do some frakenbatting. Then get the courage to do the huge spiral :O
3/5/14 Laid it out on my guest bed-a queen. I didn't expect the quilt to be so big!! Started quilting the spiral but it's a bit jaggedy :(

Adorable fabrics! If you want to showcase them, you might consider Moda Bake shop's Jungle Path baby quilt pattern:

Joke

HawkFan Oooh! I almost think I need to get more of the foot prints fabric for that one, to use as the "paths"!

True

Joke what a cute idea and love footprints for paths!

sareew

I love dinosaurs! And recently found out I'm expecting a boy! I love all the dinosaurs fabrics - I can't wait to see what you create.

HawkFan

Ooooh - the footprints would make great paths - what a great idea!

Joke

HawkFan sareew True Well that settles it. HawkFan picked out the perfect pattern right away and once I've had breakfast and get dressed I'm off to buy enough foot prints for the paths grin

libellenart

Have you thought about a "i spy" version with the fabric? you could frame it with a coordinating solid for example :-)

Joke

libellenart If I had a bigger range of dino fabrics I would love to do that but I only have these plus a couple in my stash! I do plan on doing a regular eye-spy with random novelty prints surrounded by solids though grin ...one day!!

HawkFan

Can't wait to see how this turns out. It will be adorable!

Joke

HawkFan I just hope my friend doesn't think it will look too childish (she'll be 29!!) but she is currently hatching a dinosaur egg that dissolves in water (a toy she received for Christmas, soo... heh).

I also found the foot print fabric in yellow with more pink/purple feet prints so I bought that instead since I thought it would contrast with the mostly "boy" colours for the dino prints!

libellenart

I see :-) I am glad you found more of the foot print fabric. Looking forward to see your progress on this quilt and the final quilt itself!

True

Really cute block!

Siffstitch

If your Canadian friend doesn't want it, I'll take it!

sew_what

What adorable fabrics! I like the footprint path on your block. Such a cute idea.

Joke

sew_what Siffstitch True Thanks!! This morning I went through my dino fabrics and cut out all the fabrics I need so when I feel like it I can just sew them together!

HawkFan

Has your friend commented on it via Instagram? Looking forward to seeing this develop

The square you have here is perfect, because the larger dinosaur could be Albertosaurus, named after the Canadian province it was discovered in. If you have a basic hadrosaur ("duck-billed dinosaur) with no crest, it could be Edmontosuarus...named for Edmonton!

Joke

Siffstitch I'll definitely have to add this square to the back then!!

HawkFan No, she hasn't yet. I know she's been without internet for a few days so she might be still catching up on things.

Skynme

This is great! I love the idea of the spiral quilting also. Your friend is going to love this, great job!

HawkFan

Very clever quilting idea.

Mymble

This is fantastic- the fabrics are fantastic and your quilting idea is perfect!

Caribousmom

So how cute is this!?!??!? How fun. I loved that movie!

libellenart

This looks great , Love what you did with the fabric !!!

Joke

libellenart Caribousmom Mymble HawkFan Skynme Thanks!! I still need to fix the one block but I'm excited to get it together!

HawkFan

Great progress and so nice of you to include a kitty in the photo so we know how big the quilt is smile

True

This is wonderful...and love kitty. Sashing is tough, I have gotten so I use cornerstones with it to make it easier to line up. But truth of the matter this not going to be hanging on a wall, it is going to be used and loved, and no one will know if the sashing is perfect.

Skynme

Looks like you have a saber tooth tiger loose on your Jurassic path lol. You quilt looks amazing she is going to love it.

Terryt1955

Cute quilt!! And I see the kitty is going hunting for Dino. And like Mary says, the sashing not being perfect won't be noticed. The cute fabric is what everyone focuses on.Great pattern to showcase your prints.

Joke

HawkFan lol! I'm trialling a new measuring system "paw lengths". I need to make sure I have 2 claws seam allowance wink2

Joke

True I thought about using corner stones but I was too lazy to cut up and sew such itty bitty squares (my sashing is 1" finished between the blocks). I haven't really done anything with sashing before so I guess it's just another thing to learn!!

Joke

Skynme LOL! She'll attack you with purrs and cuddles rather than growls and chomping! I hope my friend likes it! She's seen it on instagram (not knowing I'm making it for her) and she hasn't really commented on the quilt itself, but then she's not a crafter so she probably hasn't really noticed these things anyway!

Joke

Terryt1955 I'm not sure who won -- the cat or the dinos. After uploading my picture I came back to the quilt top and found it in a ball on the floor!!!

Terryt1955

Joke LOL, maybe they were just playing a friendly game of Twister?

True

It looks great as it is...a fun and colorful quilt!
