Description

After making a tote for my Mom for Christmas she has now put me to work making more totes....next year she gets coal LOL.  She told me she needed two more totes for a woman at her church and how soon could I have them done....really? The pattern is from Elizabeth Hartman and I am using the pattern for the wide tote.

The woman requested one bag to be "bright colors". She wanted one just like my Mom's, but I said no. I don't want anyone else to have one just like hers. The second tote request was a Breast Cancer Awareness themed tote. (Mom says "I think she wants the symbol on there or maybe the colors"...I wasn't given much else to go on).

1/16- This is the first of two totes in work, using my interpretation of bright colors. The fabric is a combination of Robert Kaufman Gold Flowers and Gold Jewel. I was afraid that this might be too bright and too gold for a sweet little church lady, but I think the denim toned it down a little. The second tote will be Riley Blake's Think Pink fabric, however I was told to leave the bra fabric off because it was inappropriate LOL 1/17 first tote done

1/20- Ok so the last bag was a mess and I just couldn't send it. I was going through a box and I found just enough of my supplies to make one more bag....I took this as a sign. This bag went together beautifully, probably the fastest I have ever completed one. I had no issues and the lining is almost perfect. I don't think its as cute as the last one, but I feel better about giving this one away.

That is gorgeous...love your use of the bright flowers with the denim really pretty and classy. Cannot wait to see more!

HawkFan

It's beautiful! Maybe you could sneak a couple of bras in the lining wink wink

Sewbusy64

looks great - love your fabric

Skynme

Sewbusy64 thank you!
Carolmarie thank you! This is just the front/back of the first tote. The other one isn't done just yet.
HawkFan great minds think alike, I'm going to put them inside the zipper pocket lol
True thank you! I always worry when I make gifts for others. She has an idea in her head of what she wants but without talking to her I had to go off bright colors. We will see if she likes it.

True

Skynme it is so hard making things for others when they have a request BUT I think most times when they see the final "product" it is beyond what they expected and I think that will be the case here! BUT you have my address if she decides she does not like it;-)

True

Ok that bra fabric is adorable!!! Love the beginnings of your new tote.

Quilterinmotion

I am in love with those bright fabrics! Hope your ladies love their bags as they will be gorgeous as is the first one!

Joke

What a great looking tote! Love the little bras for the touch of breast cancer awareness! How easy are the totes to put together? I've just seen on Oh, Frasson she's having a sale on her patterns so I wouldn't mind getting one! I've not made a bag before but this looks quite easy, and there's no messing with fancy interfacings from what I can see on the materials list, so it should be just the thing I need!!

Joke the tote itself is pretty simple to follow, but for some reason my lining never fits. No matter how much I measure and cut it always ends up wonky. One thing I don't like about the pattern is that it has the tall tote and wide tote together. So you will follow the directions to a step and then it will say to see steps 12-16 for the tall tote, only the sizes are different. It really screws me up sometimes. I want to do Tara Rebman's totes next. They require much less prep and the lining pieces are cut on the same template as the bag so its a perfect fit.

Joke

Hmm, maybe I won't purchase it then. I struggle with linings too, though I've only made them a couple of times in the baskets I've made. And her discount is because she wants to re-do/re-format her patterns so will be removing them for a while so I wonder if the formatting with the patterns together is something that might be changed. That does sound confusing!

Skynme

Joke honestly I love the patchwork bags, which is why I bought her pattern and I am on my 4th bag, so for $10 vs Tara's quilted tote bag craftsy class at $30(with coupon), it was worth getting. It could just be me...when it comes to following lots of steps(and flipping pages) my mind kind of wanders off. I haven't made the tote from Tara yet so I don't know how easy hers is, but its made of four pieces of the same pattern (front, back, lining front, lining back), and I like to watch the video...down side for me is cutting curves and trying to bind it. Elizabeth's pattern is all squares, but its a ton of pieces to cut and sew together for the lining.

I love this bag but so feel for you on all the issues...so upsetting. But it is adorable. I am afraid to try a tote as what you describe is my nightmare come true!!! But cute, cute, cute.

True Thanks! I really was happy with the outside, but the inside just didn't want to work with me at all. I feel better now, I think I just needed a rant(aka nervous breakdown). I'm just going to send it as is, since its free what do they have to complain about...maybe I wont get asked to make any more totes LOL.

True

Great news...I know how when things are not right they eat at you so glad it worked out and it is an awesome bag.

Mymble

Your totes are gorgeous- and LOL about sending them and then maybe they will leave you alone...but I can assure you...they are NOT going stop asking for these once they see them...they are so much nicer than anything in the stores!

sew_what

I really like the bright floral tote. The deep blues and purples give it an exotic mystique.

HawkFan

It's probably a good thing you sent them off. Otherwise, True or Mymble might show up at your door to "borrow" one or more of them. I know I would!

Skynme

HawkFan LOL seems like sticky fingers are all around lately LOL.
sew_what Thank you! I was afraid all the gold was going to be too much, but it was pretty.
Mymble I couldn't send it, I made the new one and it turned out fine. I just felt too bad about it.
True thanks! I couldn't send the crooked tote. I had to re-do it. So happy I did.
