Description

I have had a Simply Color by V. and Co. layer cake for over a year (I think!). I just couldn't decide what I wanted to do with it. I was watching the Missouri Quilt Co. videos on Youtube and decided the "Disappearing Pinwheel" would be perfect for this layer cake.

*Finally making some progress on this. Finished all the pinwheel blocks today. I hopefully will get to cut them and reassemble them this week!

*I need your input!! Which do you like better? The top or bottom in the last pic I posted? I am going to do another when I get a chance of darker/brighter fabric...OK added picture of the blocks using contrasting fabrics... with the same colorway though...what do you think now?
Think I am not going to do the churn dash, and I will do the centers with a coordinating fabric. Thanks for all your input! Finished the quilt, finally. I have no idea why this took me so long! Over all, I am pleased with the finished quilt!

Sewhappy

Love the pattern, and with such bright and fun fabric it will be a great quilt!

Joke

What an awesome block!! Going to have to give this one a try!

Trumkle

What a neat print! That came out beautifully. I really need to try this for my next comfort quilt. Was it fun to make?

TiffanyRay

Joke You really should!
Trumkle It was fun to make... mine didn't come out perfectly, but I tend NOT to be a perfectionist, so that's ok! I had to trim it up a bit...
Sewhappy - Thanks, I think it might take a while, but that's ok!

True

Some of my favorite fabric and these blocks looks awesome in it...cannot wait to see it come together.

Drnic2c

Love the block.

True

I like the bottom one better...I think when you have the blocks all together it will give a feeling of motion to the quilt but the white allows eyes to rest. It also feels less "cluttered" to me due to how the white plays in block and I like that...now having said that either will make a wonderful quilt.

Terryt1955

What great fabric (another fan of V&co) and I like the bottom one better too. I think it shows off the pinwheel better and for the same reasons as True said it isn't as cluttered.I always love your projects Tiffany so I'm sure your gut will lead you in the right direction.

Terryt1955

Forgot to ask,how many blocks will the layer cake yield in this pattern?

HawkFan

I also prefer the bottom one. The pinwheel gets a bit lost in the top one and while it's a "disappearing" pinwheel it may disappear a bit too much in the top block. I love your fabrics

Emphill

My suggestion would be to use the churn dash or the top one but switch to a pinwheel of a different colour to make it stand out more

jcourtney

I like the top one

Caribousmom

I prefer the top one - but I also agree with Emphill that if you used a different fabric for the bottom one it would give it a whole new look.

Caribousmom

I meant to say that if you use a different fabric for the PINWHEEL in the bottom one :)

Duchess

I like the top one too. I also like the suggestion that emphill made with using a different fabric for the pinwheel part.

Speattle

At first glance, the top one is my fav, but if you could post a picture of the blocks all laid out, that would give it more context. It is really about which block looks best in the overall quilt composition.

Mrsquilt

I would also need to see a couple of blocks... I would try to draw it first. Love the fabric wow!

TiffanyRay

Mrsquilt Speattle Oh...I wish I had a design wall!!! I'll hopefully get a few more blocks cut and i'll post new pictures soon. Thanks for the input.

TiffanyRay

Emphill Thanks for the suggestion, when I get more cut i'll have to try that. That might be it!

TiffanyRay

Terryt1955 Thanks! A layer cake can either make 40 blocks (if you use something different for the background...I cut white 10 inch squares. Or 20 if you use two contrasting squares. But I plan to make 20... and use the others for something else. I will use sashing and borders to enlarge it a bit.

Clairealex

I'm wondering what would happen if you alternated them--trying to visualize it in imagination, but it is difficult. I'd lay it out and consider it, though it might be awful. :-)

Joke

I like the bottom one, but I really like the trick from this pattern! I think the churn dash looks too "common" (I didn't know if that makes sense!!). I like the idea here of a different fabric for the pinwheel, which could be a fun twist to the pattern if you did it with all the blocks so all the pinwheel centres were mismatched with the outer fabric.

Skunklady

pretty colors and design. I like the bottom one more.

sew_what

I love your color scheme. Both layouts have their merits, but the bottom one is more eye-catching.

HawkFan

The blocks with the contrasting pinwheels look great!

Caribousmom

REALLY like these with the contrasting colors - they are all great!!!

True

Ditto Wendy I love the contrasting fabrics but in the same colorway. And it that pair I like the churn dash better...

ArloDeanQuilts

Love the contrasting blocks! This is going to be very pretty

Terryt1955

You are definitely on the right track. I would alternate using all 4 blocks and make one beautiful quilt. Just love these fabrics!

sewcraftyjenn

I love the contrast between the dark and light fabrics. And I personally enjoy the churn dash block but the pinwheel pops out more in the other block. So I think the churn dash gives you a true disappearing pinwheel. Hope that helps! I love your colors and fabrics. :)

Duchess

Love the different fabrics for pinwheels. Really will add some depth to the quilt top.

True

I really like your final lay out...great way to use this fabric!

Drnic2c

I love the final layout. Great job.

Juline

I've never seen this block before. Love your quilt. (A rag quilt started my journey as well, BTW. :) )
