Description

My youngest has just moved to Italy for a year but before going she asked if I would make her a quilt. She picked out the fabric saying she wanted a quilt that would remain timeless. I was so surprised that she chose such a neutral palette. She also said she wanted me to make the same pattern I did for 2 of her other sisters, one that I swore I would never make again. Not because it's difficult but one I've made 5 other times and felt needed to be retired. But who am I to question, it is her quilt after all. This pattern goes together fast and is great because there are no seams to match up other than the blocks from row to row. A great beginner's quilt that looks different every time based on the fabric you choose.

02/21/14 The blocks are completed and on the design wall. Just need to play around with placement a little making sure it feels right.

03/25/14 I went to a quilt retreat over the weekend and was able to finish the top that I started at Wendy's house the weekend before.. Now I just need to wait for the border fabric to come in the mail. I've chosen a taupe polka dot from Little Black Dress that I think is going to be just the little pop for this very neutral quilt. After staring at these fabrics for the last 2 weekends I am SO ready for a bright pick me up project!

3/29/14 My fabric for the border came in.  I really like the contrast between it and the body of the quilt. Gives it a little modern edge (no pun intended).

Your daughter picked a wonderul selection of fabrics. The blocks look good on the design wall. Lucky daughter!

True

I agree great, classy taste...this is going to be beautiful and will be timeless... This would be a great quilt to start your FMQ adventure on;-)

True

And I meant to mention I think those are some of the best pressed block I have ever seen ;-)!!!

Terryt1955

True you crack me up but yes I do love my new iron! I'm having a hard time getting motivated on working this "timeless" quilt because in addition it's rather a boring quilt. At this point in the year I crave color! Thanks for the classy comment.

HawkFan

It is timeless and classic (& classy). At least it goes together quickly so you can move on to more colorful quilts

ArloDeanQuilts

Your daughter has great taste! I love this quilt!

Terryt1955

HawkFan Good point! I need to "just do it" so I can start something bright.I was playing with my stash tonight picking out bright colorways for your march block so that was great therapy!

Terryt1955

ArloDeanQuilts Thank you. I know she's going to be pleased with it if I'd just get the lead out.....

HawkFan

Terryt1955 Sometimes I have to take a side trip in to another project if I need a break. The bee blocks are a great way to do that. I was happy to be of help LOL

Caribousmom

You are doing a great job on this one, Terry. And although I know it is not your choice, your daughter will love and cherish it!!

Terryt1955

Carolmarie Thanks! I still have to sew all the blocks together before I decide on how I'm going to quilt it.It only looks assembled because of the design wall. I think I'll cop out and go with an echo quilting 1/4" away from each block's seam.

Terryt1955

HawkFan LOL, yes your lovely star block was a great diversion. And I do think I'll be copying it for a baby quilt I need to make!

Terryt1955

Caribousmom Yes I think you are right that she will love wrapping up in it when she's so far from home. A mom hug!

Caribousmom

Terryt1955 Exactly!!

HawkFan

Perfect description - "mom hug"

Caribousmom

Beautiful, Terry!

Terryt1955

Caribousmom Thanks, and I can't wait to get my hands on that border fabric. When ever I see this quilt I'll think of you!

ArloDeanQuilts

So beautiful!

Conniharns

Terry, you finished!! This quilt looks so different in person. I love it. It is so pretty..the fabrics are beautiful. Since you didn't use layer cakes...must have taken awhile to cut all those pieces!

Terryt1955
Terryt1955

Conniharns What the heck are you doing up so early??? It does look a lot different in person doesn't it. Pictures are only so good at capturing a quilt. Did you finish the baby quilt you were working on at our Girl's Weekend? SO much fun! (Okay, quick, what song are you singing right now?)

Conniharns

Terryt1955 I am singing..."I watta go to sleep!!" I was awake from 2-4.. Should be a great day at work! Yes...this quilt is so beautiful and you don't see the richness of the fabrics in the pics. Yes I did get the back pieced on Makinleys quilt. Got batting yesterday..another 20 yrs ..and it will be done!

Caribousmom
Terryt1955

Conniharns Sounds like a Diet Coke day! Just keep on singing to keep awake. I expect Makinley's quilt to be done in 1 month! Don't make that baby wait 20 years!

True

I love this quilt and wish I COULD see it in person! Great job.

Conniharns

Terryt1955 Carolmarie True True and Carol...you would be surprised to see this in person because the dark fabric for instance looks dk brown but in essence it is the most beautiful deep wine colored purple. Just beautiful. This quilt screams "classy and good taste" to me!

Terryt1955

True I was going to say I'll bring it on our retreat but realized it will be in Italy.

Terryt1955

Carolmarie Thanks Carol. It will probably measure 91'x91" once the borders are on. And knowing me I'll straight line quilt it probably a 1/4" from the seams. I just don't have the courage to try FMQ on this thing nor the shoulder and neck strength!

True

Terryt1955 maybe we will have to go to it;-)

HawkFan

True ROAD TRIP!! (or do you call it that when you fly?). Somehow Plane Trip just doesn't conjure up the same images

Terryt1955

HawkFan True Well even if we fly we still will need to rent a car at some point and then we can scream "Road Trip" at the top of our lungs. I'm envisioning a little "Thelma & Louise" right now!

True

HawkFan Terryt1955 love it...god wouldn't that be awesome!

Terryt1955

HawkFan You forgot to put a "quilt" emoji. Oh that's right, there isn't one!

HawkFan

I thought since we were going with the movie theme, "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" was appropriate. Oops, I guess I should have used two of each to have plural. Funny that there's no quilt emoji on this site

Caribousmom

You ladies are cracking me up!!

I have to second what Conniharns said - this is an amazing quilt in person...the photos do not do it justice...and just wait until you see the border fabric...oooh la la...lucky daughter you have, Terry!

Terryt1955

Caribousmom The fabric came in on Wednesday and I didn't find it until last night as I was going to bed. It was buried under laundry. Imagine that, gone for 2 weekends straight and there's laundry heaped on the couch to be folded. And it's going to stay there while I quilt some more!

Terryt1955

Caribousmom Conniharns Oh and thanks for letting people know the picture downplays the fabric. It does look pretty boring now. But those polka dots are going to be fabulous!

Conniharns

It's already fabulous...dots or no dots! Can't wait to see it finished.

Readerowl

Border looks beautiful with the quilt!

Caribousmom

That border is PERFECT, Terry. Love, love, love!

HawkFan

Such a perfect border fabric!

True

Love that polka dots ...what a perfect addition. I really love this quilt!

Terryt1955

True HawkFan Caribousmom Carolmarie Readerowl Conniharns Thanks!!! I am so happy with the direction this quilt is taking. What a difference a border can make! Now I need to figure out how to piece the back!

HawkFan

Yeah you do all the work on the front and then have to turn around and put something together for the back too.

Caribousmom

Hmmm, the back. How about piecing a map of Italy? LOL - joking! I'm sure you'll come up with something fabulous :)

HawkFan

Caribousmom - or how about all the places she's lived! Sorry Terry, I couldn't resist piling on. Feeling ornery tonight I guess

Terryt1955

Holy mocarena, you guys sure are creative! Needless to say I won't be piecing a map of Italy! I'd settle for just using up my leftover scraps!

Skynme

This quilt is lovely, she is going to cherish it forever.

Terryt1955

Skynme You are so sweet and I surely hope so.

ArloDeanQuilts

All I can say is still gorgeous!!

Terryt1955

ArloDeanQuilts Thanks!!
